Synopsis

Until its acquisition by Cingular in October 2004, AT&T Wireless was the second largest wireless carrier in the United States, following its split from AT&T in July 2001. Following the split, it proceeded to exit its fixed wireless business, and acquired the remaining shares in TeleCorp. It operated one of the largest US digital wireless networks, holding 850MHz and 1900MHz licences to provide wireless services covering 99% of the US population, and providing approximately 69% of the US population with at least 30MHz of wireless spectrum. For details of the acquisition, see the separate Cingular Wireless report.
