Synopsis

América Móvil has grown into one of the world’s major mobile providers, with operations throughout Latin America. The company is listed on the NYSE, and is controlled by Mexican billionaire Carlos Slim. América Móvil’s home market is Mexico, where it holds around 77% of the country’s mobile market share through its subsidiary Telcel. Through acquisitions or licences, it has spread its footprint into Argentina, Brazil, Colombia, Ecuador, El Salvador, Guatemala, Nicaragua and the USA. During 2004-2005, it further expanded into Chile, Paraguay, Peru and Uruguay. América Móvil is primarily involved in mobile communications, and has been upgrading most of its networks with GSM technology. It also controls fixed-line subsidiaries in El Salvador, Nicaragua and Guatemala.
