Synopsis

Archived report: this report was archived in August 2005 and was last updated in July 2004. Embratel is controlled by Mexico’s Telmex, which completed the acquisition of MCI’s controlling stake in June 2004 with the regulator’s formal approval. Despite growing competition, Embratel remains the leading provider of international telephony, high-speed data transmission and Internet services in Brazil. Having met all of its build-out goals, Embratel obtained a local fixed-line licence in August 2002, and launched services in November 2002. In December 2003, it acquired WLL and broadband provider Vésper.
