Synopsis

As with all industries, Telecommunication companies have formed industry associations to achieve common goals. In the early days, these organisations were mainly concerned with protecting their own commercial interests, with the result that there was a proliferation of standards and technologies. In recent years, this has started to change, with more effort to rationalise standards, and to concentrate on developing new markets. This report describes the major consortia dealing with broadband issues. Research in this area was discontinued in 2003.
