Synopsis

Archived report. This report was archived in 2005 and has not been updated. Incumbent carriers were very profitable until the global move to deregulate and allow much higher levels of competition. This slowed growth, and provided carriers with incentives to replace the lost revenues by moving into other markets and, most easily, by acquiring other companies. This was assisted by the ease of acquiring funds from the world’s stock markets in which telecommunications companies were the darlings. With the collapse of the stock market euphoria, the bubble burst and profits turned into huge losses for many. This report covers the history of the revenue growth, and analyses the improving results since 2003.
