Synopsis

While the providers of mobile services are desperately trying to expand into data services, voice still makes up about 95% of mobile revenue and looks like remaining the killer application. Recent developments in 2½G and 3G will help but are not seen as the answer. Fixed wireless services are slowly being replaced in some areas by mobile services, although developing technologies such as WLL, WLAN and Bluetooth have shown potential. Geosynchronous satellites are still giving good service, but LEOs and MEOs have been a failure to date. This report gives an overview of the entire wireless market, with references to detailed reports on each aspect of that market.
