Synopsis

Hughes Electronics designs, manufactures and markets advanced electronic systems. It was formed in December 1985 when General Motors acquired the Hughes Aircraft Company. It comprises Hughes Network Systems, which is a global supplier of satellite-based private business networks, wireless telephone networks and digital cellular mobile systems; DirecTV, which is a satellite-based provider of digital quality television entertainment and information programming; and PanAmSat, the operator of a global network of 21 satellites that provide broadcast and telecommunications. In April 2003, News Corp took a 34% holding in Hughes, leaving General Motors with the majority holding. Research on this company was discontinued in 2003.
