Synopsis

In sharp contrast to the mobile telephone industry, whose subscriber base doubled in 2000, almost repeated the performance in 2001, and was still booming in 2002, the paging service sector in India is in decline. There are now only six operators still in business. Just as mobiles picked up momentum in mid-1998, the paging sector peaked and then ground to a halt – going the way of most countries in Asia. But unlike most countries, paging services were introduced in India at the same time as the mobile phone. This report examines India’s paging sector and takes a look at the remaining operators.
