Synopsis

Archived report: this report was archived in August 2007 and has not been updated. Even before the 2003 second Gulf war, Iraq had one of the poorest telecommunications services in the world due to the effects of a ruined economy, economic sanctions and the 1991 Gulf War. The 2003 war destroyed a large part of the already inadequate infrastructure in its first week. Before the 2003 war, Iraq had less than a million fixed-line subscribers and no national mobile network. Internet use was also highly restricted with few users.
